Bright Start® Maternity Program

AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina offers extra benefits for our expecting members. Any monetary benefits will be delivered to members via the CARE Card.

Rewards 

• Free electric breast pump and milk storage bags shipped to home for pregnant or new members between 28 weeks of gestation and 12 months postpartum
• $50 to purchase crib or sheets for baby within the first year of life
• Infant car seat for pregnant members
• $50 a month to purchase diapers and wipes for the first 12 months of baby’s life
• $100 per month to purchase infant formula for the first six months of baby’s life
• Regional baby showers to celebrate new and expecting moms

Important things to do before you leave the hospital:

• Enroll your baby in the AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina health plan. Contact your local health department to complete enrollment for your baby.
• Set up health care checks for your baby.
• Your baby should be seen by a health care provider three to five days after birth. The next health care check should be two to four weeks later. Check the Bright Start guide (PDF) to find out more about:
  • Setting up provider visits for your baby
  • Keeping your baby’s vaccine (shots) up to date
  • Getting your baby tested for lead poisoning — even if your baby seems healthy.
• Call Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) — the supplemental nutrition program — to let them know you had your baby and sign up for the program. WIC can also help with breastfeeding.
• Set up a visit with your health care provider for your postpartum visit. It must be seven to 84 days after delivery to get the CARE Card rewards.
